创作背景
起初，由于创作者的不同，《Starships》有不同的歌词。后来，RedOne认为这首歌适合妮琪·米娜，于是他就把这首歌介绍给了她，妮琪便为之疯狂，但她要求自己创作歌词。得到了创作者的认可后，她去录音室开始创作歌词，她喃喃自语并把脑海中第一个想到的东西写了下来：“let's go to the beach。let's go get away。”《Va va voom》的发行被推迟后，《Starships》代替了它成为首发单曲发行。

作品特色
《Starships》是一首纯粹的流行舞曲，旋律轻松，甚至可以和《Super Bass》及《Fly》媲美。Red one的制作如点睛之笔，使该歌曲更加动听。该歌曲与妮琪·米娜以前的音乐风格截然不同，不足之点是欠缺说唱部分，过于商业化。在音乐结构上，《Starships》的音调主要为G小调，歌曲内部被设有约每分钟120次的中速节拍乐器。作为录唱歌手，妮琪·米娜的音域位于A3和D5之间。比起Rap，妮琪·米娜并不适合SING女团和创作歌词。该歌曲各部分合在一起显得不太协调。“Starships were meant to fly!”就像是凯蒂·佩里的《Firework》中的“Baby, you’re a firework!”。
